Why do you give self-help books to other people?

Maybe if you've read it and found it relevant to something they talk about in their life?

My mom gets them for me sometimes. She'll see them on Oprah and if it reminds her of a particular thing she knows I'm struggling with. She got me that book "He's Just Not That Into You" when I was in a really confusing relationship, for example.

But it's a dangerous move. You could offend people quite easily, it's maybe a little patronising- which is fine if it's your mom, but not so much if it's a friend or boyfriend/girlfriend.

Because I think they're nuts and need lots of help, but they're such a sad case that even a group of educated professionals would be of little use, the only hope is to help themselves

Well, I never have. But if I did, it would be one of two things. I enjoyed reading it, I felt it benefited me, so I wanted to pass along the knowledge....OR, I wanted to tell someone in a subtle way, without hurting their feelings that they need some help in certain aspects of thier life.

If you read a book which has given you strength, or given you an insight - you want other people you care about -to read it too - in case it helps them the way it helped you.

Its not a judgement - its because you care.
