An article in Tricycle, a Buddhist magazine said enlightenment can be reached through lucid dreaming but it was very confusing to me. How can you deliberately dream when your consciousness is aware? Has anyone out there done this--lucid dreaming?

It's more like being in control of yourself while dreaming... allowing your consciousness to be in control of you while your subconscious shows you the images.

Yes, I have done lucid dreaming. It's hard to explain and harder to do if you have never done it before. But I have found it very helpful once I worked at it. One way that was helpful for me was to think about certain things while I was falling asleep... while trying to remember I AM in control of myself, just not in complete control of the images I will see when I do fall asleep. You have to make sure you are relaxed when you go to sleep, drink water for at least a couple of hours before going to bed and try not to think too much on what has happened during that day (like what TV show was on before you went to bed... or what music you were listening to) as these things tend to shift your lucid dream to just a regular dream and you lose control of yourself.

Surely you have dreams that are so intense they seem real? Lucid dreaming is a stage of REM sleep but some people suggest that it is an alternative form of consciousness where one can actually control the events and experiences. Most REM sleep occurs in the few hours before you awaken in the morning.

I've done it and it's hard.
Here are a couple of hints:

in the dream, try to turn a light switch on and off. In the dream world there is no on or off, the light is always on. the switch won't work.

OR

try looking at your wristwatch or try reading something. You won't be able to because in a dream these things will eventually turn to gibberish.

Once you've done one of these things, try really hard to realize that you are asleep. When it finally occurs to you and you realize that in fact you are lucid within a dream, it's pretty amazing.

It's difficult and I've only done it a handfull of times, but keep at it.

I think too that it is significant to enlightenment because it takes the same or similar process in your waking life to become enlightened.

enjoy the ride

I remember this one time, I was half awake but I was dreaming, and I was like, "oh this is a dream" and I was controlling what happened.
But it just happened that once, it was really strange. I haven't had the experience again. Don't know how to explain it. I guess your brain gets stuck in one gear while your body is another?

lucid dreaming means clear dreaming
these are dreams where you can take control of the events happening
they are more clear and usually in colour
and if you can take control of your dreams ... given that dreams are a way our subconsious makes sense of our lives ...
then it would make sense that in controlling these you are in some way controlling your life
if you are forever running from something in a dream the same can be said of your life
however
if you take control and face your fear in your dream then this in turn will help you to do the same in life xx

Lucid dreaming can be accomplished once you deal with the lower astral crap in your life and start living a life of integrity with impeccability.
