he's eating normally and playing normally, I dont think he's ill, but he never seems to wash himself any more. His white patches and feet are looking slightly grubby. any ideas?

dont rub Felix cat food on the poor creature, he's just shy about licking himself in public

that's not a good sign, poor kitty. Are you combing or brushing him? That might encourage him to start washing himself again. You can also wash him gently with moist kitchen paper. Is using his litter tray (or going outside) ok? Have you been able to have a look at his tongue and make sure it's ok? That might be what's stopping him licking?
My cats - who as you may know looks JUST like yours, has stained his paws with god knows what but is keeping the rest of himself clean.
If he's still not washing after a week or so, you maybe need to get him checked out by a vet.
Good luck.

I can't say whether he is cleaning himself but my cats white feet are really grubby and he washes himslef all the time, I think I must just live in a dirty area!!! You can always give him a bit of a brushanyway to help him out!

He's run out of shampoo and conditioner? No seriously, I'd watch him closely and take him to the vet if he develops any more symptoms. You didn't mentioned how old he was and how long he's gone without washing. I have a grey and (mostly) white 3-legged cat. She's always persil white and I would worry if she looked grubby because it's out of character for her.

Definitely get a vet's point of view on this one. When my cat stopped washing herself she was diagnosed as having kidney problems (although she had a couple of symptons of which not washing was only one.)

As long as he is eating and playing normally, I think he is healthy. Many tomcats aren't clean like female cats. That's their nature.
Try to brush his fur, perhaps he'll like it. After that he will look more beautiful and clean.
I'm german, and we say: Dirty feet are smelling like cheese. Perhaps that is the reason he doesn't lick his feet. (joke)
Probably you will take a wet cloth to clean his feet, latest before he jumps onto your bed.

Well, my cats 19 and she went through a phase of not washing herself aswell. We took her to the vet and apparently its because she's old, so she cant really reach.
But if your cats old, then try brushing/combing him because this may encourage it.
If not, take him to the vet.
Hope this helps!!

Is your cat overweight? Mycat washes herself, but because she's a bit of a porker, there are are certain places she simply cannot reach! I have to groom all the mats out of her from the back of her neck right down to the tip of her tail because she is too fat to reach these places herself!
