They cannot help that they are bipolar. But they have to be responsible for taking their medications everyday. They also have to participate in counseling.
Feel sorry? Manipulation? That's on YOU, not them. Only you can control how you feel and react.

In my opinion, if you have to ask then you have answered your own question. I can't believe in this generation that so many people are ignorant when it comes to mental illness. Get on the thousands of websites and you will have many answers to this question. I have compassion for all persons with any type of illness! Bipolar can be treated...the person has to be open to this and seek the help they need. I'm unclear on your comment, "as if you really care for them, then they could manipulate you". No one can manipulate you, that's your choice. I have two friends who have this illness, and I never feel that they are using their illness to manipulate me. Sometimes, I believe that people who have this illness or in this situation, you are the one who has a problem with showing your true feelings, don't think it is based on the bipolarism, research your own emotions. You have to be confident in your true self before you can accept others as they are.

I tried to give a friend the benefit of the doubt and rented a room to her. Big Mistake! My daughter 27,my grand-daughter 7 and I needed a roommate to help with the rent. We tried to deal with her for 3 months. It just got to be too much. Albeit, my house was always clean because she couldn't sit still, she rearranged every cupboard, tore down an old shed in the backyard with a sledgehammer and just basically tried to change this house to be her own. I finally told her she had to leave when she went into one of her "moods" and scared my daughter enough, so that she grabbed my grand-daughter and snuck out of the back door and ran to a liquor store to call me at work and they were both barefoot! She wasn't happy about leaving, but she said she knew it was coming.
I do feel sorry for her, but I am glad she is not in my house any more. It doesn't seem that her meds were doing anything. Last I heard she was living in northern California (I'm in southern Ca).
The person I feel sorry for most and wish I could help, is her 5 year old daughter. This beautiful girl is going to grow up with some major issues. I pray that God watches out for both of them. He knows I tried...

NO.
It's an illness that is treatable. I have no pity for those that suffer with it and choose to deny treatment. I may sympathize with those that are trying to work through treatment and haven't found all the things that work for them - because treating mental illness is still a crap shoot...not all meds work the same for everyone.
I do have pity for those who have to live with untreated bi-polar...their loved ones, family, friends. Being manipulated is YOUR fault. Take responsibility for your own actions. Don't let them manipulate you.
Having bi-polar doenst give you a bye in normal life - it doens't give you some unwritten permission to act like a fool, or to disrespect others. It does give you the knowledge that you need treatment and maybe some extra patience and understanding, but it doens't mean you get to wreck lives around you.

after living with someone who is bipolar I say I dont feel sorry for them if they wont get treatment. the mood swings are impossible to put up with and can end up hurting your health from the stress on you waiting for the other shoe to drop ,wondering if this is a good mood minute or bad mood minute and it can be minutes doesnt have to be an hour or more. They are sometimes great manipulaters and if they choose to treat themselves with drugs or alchohol they are fooling you and them into thinking it works ,believe me it doesnt and only makes matters worse for both of you..when they are in a happy mood you try to forget what the last mean mood was like, I have been threatened,I have been abused and almost killed before I got scared enough to get out,and you know what he has a new woman in his life is still drinking and beating her ,when he is in a good mood he is sweet and loveable and funny if you can not get them to go get counseling get out, stay away you could get hurt or killed. Im sure some bipolar people have different symptoms but I think the answer to could they maipulate you yes yes yes

Bipolar people can lead a normal life if THEY TAKE THIER MEDs. Its a misunderstood thing. If they dont take thier meds like they should they will likely have run ins with the law and end up in jail or hurt someone else.

NO, YOU SHOULD NOT "FEEL SORRY" FOR ANYONE WHO IS DISABLED! HAVE SOME EMPATHY. READ ABOUT BIPOLAR AND DO NOT BE SO IGNORANT. IT IS A DISEASE, JUST LIKE MS, LUPUS, CANCER, ETC. THE STIGMA OF MENTAL ILLNESS SEEMS TO BE STICKING WITH YOU. EDUCATE YOURSELF!
