I have a 7 month old male pit and he doesnt bark at anyone, unless you have food/treat and he wants it. My question to you is what type of situation is it that he is in for him to bark (be defensive) and then back off (is he being approached?) There are some details left out so it is hard to answer your question. But I would say as long as he shows no agression (snarling, lunging, hair raised on back) that he is just learning how to bark and do what dogs do. As long as his tail is wagging and not pointed straight in the air the barking is ok. Unless it annoyes you. He is still quite young and is developing, I am sure there will be other things he does that puzzle the brain. Hope this helps.

The breed doesn't matter.. It's socialization that he needs. Is he neutered? If not, get it done, asap. Unneutered males are more aggressive/fearful and are more prone to biting.

Next, you need to have him, ON LEASH, around strangers until he becomes more confident. Bring him to petstores that allow leashed animals. WALK him.. well excercised dogs are less aggressive.

If he starts the behavior, stop him right away. By letting him do this, you are encouraging the behavior. Make him sit and stay by your side. Again, this is why you use a leash, so he can't back up or run away. Once he is sitting, have the person walk closer, but don't allow petting if he's fighting to get away. Once he realizes that the person means no harm, he'll enjoy people coming up to him.

Good Luck

I have no idea if it's normal but I'd suggest doing some training and socialization to minimize this behavior.

Your dog barking at people does not really help combat the pit bull stereotype. Anytime you take your dog in public, he should be an ambassador for the breed. If you actually want your dog to bark at people, you have no business owning a pit bull.

Its not normal, but its not uncommon. Alot of dogs, regardless of breed, are afraid of strangers, but fear can turn into aggression, so I would start learning about ways to correct this or you may end up with more serious issues in the future. And tho the people saying your dog will just grow out of is, IMO, one of the most ignorant things Ive heard. Typically, and this comes from years of experience, it will just get worse if you dont put the effort into correcting it. The reason it gets worse is the dog will usually get the reation it wants; getting the person its afraid of to stay away from it, and this just reenforces the behavior.

Well my Pittie does the same thing. He is kind of shy around new people at first... well at least until you get them into the house and then he is all over them. Maybe your dog is just more on the timid side, which is okay but you just have to be careful when he meets new people, because a scared dog is more likely to bite.

Take care.

Sounds very normal, however you would want to train him not to be so timid. If you see someone that is welcoming to the dog, bring the dog to the person and incourage the dog to go up to the person. Your dog seems like he is interested but yet timid. Of course you don't want the dog to be aggressive, so be sure to introduce them to what they are barking and tell the dog that it is okay. Eventually he may stop and maybe not depending on the dogs personaltity.

Yeah it's normal. I have a pit bull/mix and he does the same exact thing. He's trying to impress you by barking but he's really scared. It's shows how much he wants to please you.
