JOP= justice of the peace
I was recently told that we weren't married according to God because we weren't married by a 'man of God'

Of course God accepts your marriage. It was done legally, so it's fine. It doesn't have to be a religious ceremony to be ok with God....just legal.
EDIT:
Whoever told you that is being ridiculous.....if we follow that same line of thinking, I was married originally by a JOP also, decided I needed a little "religion" in my life at the time, so we repeated our vows again and were married by a catholic priest, this time, THEN I GOT SAVED AND LEFT THE catholic church......do I hafta get married AGAIN? No, God still honoured the FIRST ceremony, that's the one that counts.

He may or may not agree to accept your decsion to get married because it was your choice but nevertheless he will bless your marriage with bliss and happiness if you live according to His commands and it will be your own doing away from Him that will make your relationship with your spouse in trouble. You and your spouse accepted each other to love one another and you married together as result of that choice but you made God your witness and you asked Him to Bless you in your journey through married life. Even if it is a Judge that conducted the ceremony, that Judge did not only act as witness for the people but also for God whether He is a believer or not.

The simple answer here is yes. You are married in the eyes of God if you have made the commitment to one another in your heart.
There is no man made ceremony that God requires of anyone for anything.
To often we tend to confuse God and his way with man and his way.
Anything outside the bible is either made up by man, or made more complicated by man.
Read your bible, stick with what God says, obey the rules and laws of your country and most of all invite God into your marriage not just to the ceremony.

Yes, God recognizes your marriage.
The authority of the Justice of the Peace is given from God.
(I'm surprised that so many do not know what a JOP is.)
To Pontius Pilate, Jesus said,
John 19:11 Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

A man cannot marry or join two people together, only God can do that. The JOP just happened to be the tool He used. The vows and commitments you made to each other are honored by God. The Bible says what is biding on earth is binding in Heaven. It says when we die as we were known on earth we will be known in heaven.
If you are regretting getting married by the JOP there's nothing saying you can't renew your marraige vows in a church.

Well, you are legally married. IF you were interested in a religious ceremony that would be "recognized" by God, talk to a local priest. I can't remember what your religious affiliation is, but that's up to you. If you are non-Christian, why are you worried about if God will accept your marriage. If you are Christian, then a simple reaffirmation of vows before a priest will work.

I believe that once you and your partner commit to each other totally then you are married in God's eyes. Who controls the ceremony, all the paperwork just man putting his own hand in God's business. You are married! My wife and I were married in a similar way.

Of course. If you are a member of a church, perhaps at this 20-year anniversary mark (congratulations!) might be a time to renew your vows in the presence of your minister and congregation.
But as for God...your vows are valid.

All God desires is that you love one another. Man wants to control through fear and dogma. You are given freewill by the ALL MIGHTY to choose and love to the best of your ability.Only you can live your life. Those that are judging you shall have their day very soon!
