The dog is Oliver, a beloved member of our family, who happens to be a beautiful 3-year-old cocker spaniel with a wonderful disposition. He seems to love everyone and we think there won't be a problem. What steps can we take to make it easier for him?

When we had both our boys, we got an extra "hat" for the baby from the hospital. The baby wore it and then my husband brought it home for the dogs to smell and get familiar with the scent. We were lucky and our dogs did fine, but we did make a point to give them lots of extra attention so they wouldn't think they were getting pushed aside for new baby and become jealous, too.

I did what Melon did, too. But instead of a hat I introduced a blankie. The dog will get the new babies scent off of a piece of clothing or bedding.
Congratulations on the new baby!!
Oliver will do just fine around new baby! Good luck!

Let him sniff some of the baby's belongings. Let him go into the baby's room...But most importantly, show your dog lots of attention and if he wants to sniff the baby-let him and of course, be watchful while doing so. Don't just push him to the side or yell "NO".... When the baby is sleeping, show him lots and lots of love.
