what happens when a state enters the Union??

There are lots of things that happen both before AND after a state is added to the number of states in the US.
After.
1. The flag is redesigned to reflect the number of states.
2. There are two new US senators added.
3. The house is reapportioned to reflect the new population distribution (It's currently limited to 435 members by law).
4. All existing federal laws apply to the new state.
