The running of the nose refers to the clear liquid that is expelled from the body during a cold, its a bit like water hences it runs. Feet smell when they have been in socks and shoes all day and hence the smell is the first sense one picks up on.

I don't know about you but my nose still smells and my feet do the running... I tried smelling through my ear, didn't work and I tried putting my tennis shoe on my nose and that too, didn't quite work.
