It really depends. They are hard, and sometimes - no matter how hard you work at it, it might not last.
It takes:
-the ability to trust the other person
-communication and the ability to communicate with them
-honesty
-hard work on both parts
-compromise
-visitation as much as you both can.
-a certain amount of optimism

I've known my boyfriend for two years; but we have been together for 7 months and live about 3 hours apart.

Yes, long distance relationships work just fine. When the person gets close is when they start not working anymore.

it depends how hard you are willing to make it work. I dated someone who lived about 8 hours away in another state for 6 months, it was great while it lasted and we broke up bc of personal differences, not distance. So it can work, i never believed it would until i did it. It can be fun, just depends on you!

How far and for how long? I think they can but it really depends on how far and for long, because ppl really do grow apart.
