I'm looking for a book or resources for 12yr old girl who lives in a heart breaking situation. She is becoming discouraged after living with her father who got custody of her a couple of years ago. He is not emotionally supportive of her, he is over controlling to the point of being a jerk. He is an angry man and takes it all out on her and anyone else in the family who crosses his path. Social services was called on him this week because he wouldn't take her to the dr after being sick for a week. So far social services hasn't done their part in what's best for her. A stupid judge gave him custody a couple of years ago because she was living with maternal grandma who took great care of her (mom runs around).
I'm looking for something to give her that will encourage her spirit so that she won't become defeated inside, preferably Christian based but will consider other resources.
Those of us who love her feel like our hands our tied. If we speak up we don't get to see her.

The "Chicken Soup" books are excellent. They have one for the pre-teen soul and for the teen soul.

Life can be very hard for kids at that age and they don't need all that extra crap that she is having to put up with. Do your best to be able to remain in contact with her and be supportive so she always, always knows that she will have someone to turn to, who will "have her back".

I don't understand why her father fought for custody of her, some sort of "power trip" maybe, but I guess that really doesn't matter at this point. She needs to know that she has someone in her corner that really cares about her and her well-being.

The Road To Berlin.

A real story from WWII. Shows what the human spirit can endure and overcome. Makes an everyday existance with angry relatives seem a walk in the park by comparison. I learned, from this book, that humans are capable of far more than they can ever imagine and it helped me frame my current existance in the context of these brave individuals and realize what I am experiencing is surmountable with little effort.

check out the 'Chicken Soup' series... or, if she is pretty mature, you could get her A Purpose Driven Life. It's a Christian book that is great for those who want to sit down and really look deep into their life - as a Christian and otherwise.
