he probably just doesn't like your cat. How can he only be allergic to the CAT and not the hair and dander everywhere....think about it!

My nephew was when he was little but he grew out of it. I am sure that a lot of people have had reactions at one time in their life and just assume it to be true always. This could be the case and he just doesn't realize it. If you want to know for sure you could accidentally not close the door all the way next time he comes over and see if the cat comes in the room and he is unaware if he has symptoms. If it doesn't bother you to put the cat away though just do it so there isn't any problems.

I believe yes, you can be part time allergic to cats or any other animals. I had a friend that was very allergic to dogs or cats. One day her family got a dog for her and her bothers and sisters. After a month of suffering through her allergic reactions to the dog they magically dissappeared to this day. This was over ten years ago. My doctor says some people can get passed their allergic reactions to animals simply by being exposed to them for a time. Be carefull though due to not everyone is the same.

Not sure if 'part time' allergy is the right term... I have a shar-pei (notorious for causing contact allergies) and two cats at home. I also have a couple of horses. As long as I don't put my face near to their fur there is no problem whatsoever, but it's easy to get carried away and I can guarantee that if I snuggle them up to my face I will develop an itchy rash within minutes! i can stroke / groom them but cannot tolerate contact with their fur on my face. Incidentally, if I stroke the dog with the inside of my forearm the same thing happens - an itchy rash, but this does'nt apply to the cats and horses...

Personal experience.... It is very possible.
A few years ago, i was at a friend's friend's New Year's party. They have 2 cats at that house. I was perfectly fine, then a few minutes later, i started sneezing ALOT.. eyes were watery and everything... then i noticed one of the cats in the room near me..
an hour later when it left the room, the symptoms started to subside.. and when we were outside at the bonfire, i was in perfect condition.. then came back into the basement room, and the cat was there, and the sneezing/watery eyes/stuffed up nose started up again

My brother is deathly allergic to my two cats-short haired variety. I have seen him break out, get sick etc. He can barely come in here and stay 10 minutes. At my sister's house, she has a long haired cat and he gets NO symptoms at all-he could hang around all day there. It doesn't make any sense.

Maybe the cat comes up to him and rubs. If the cat fur and dander is not stired up (like people foolishly vacuuming right before) it most likely will not bother him. It could be also that he is alergic to something on the cat,(like flea powder )and thats why its only when the cats around.

Many people believe they are allergic to cats, when in fact the problem is they do not like them. They are therefore emotionally allergic to cats, not to the cat dander which is what bothers people who are physically allergic.
I had a friend who used to claim to be allergic to tobacco smoke, but it was proved often enough that it was just that he did not like the smell, and did not want his house to smell like tobacco smoke, so he claimed "allergy" to insist people smoke out on the patio. Then he'd sit out on the patio with them, even downwind of them, and never complain. He loved hanging out talking to people while they smoked because he loved hanging out talking to people all the time. It's just that he didn't want his house to smell of smoke.
I sometimes claim an allergy to a perfume or aftershave I simply hate, as an excuse to keep my distance from someone who, to me, smells sickening. Maybe that is an allergy, because eventually my stomach knots up. But it's an emotional one, because I am OK testing the same products on my own hand in a drug store. I say, "No, I don't like, that," but I don't cough or choke, and don't grow nauseous.
