Yes. Cats express many emotions through their tails. If they thump their tail in a fast paced manner, they are usually irritated, agitated or mad about something and this is a warning to you (or whoever the agitator is) because their next move isn't going to be a nice one!

Tail and ears working together tell you what you want to know. You want your cat to have her tail and ears straight up because that means "I am in a good mood and not threatened by anything. Hi human."
When the ears look like airplane wings and the tail is down, you have displeased kitty in some way. Better check on what and why.

Cats express their feelings with their tail, as well as by rubbing against someone, purring, etc. A soft swish, rapidly, usually means kitty's happy. A slow swish back and forth usually means, regardless if there has been no further indication, that kitty is annoyed at something. Watch out.

Cats can express several emotions with their tails; anger, irritation, curiosity, joy, playfulness, relaxation......watching a cat's body language can tell you a lot about their mood. Here's a cool guide to all their little signs:

Totally, that's one of the ways. I like the happy waving of the tail in the air from side to side, kind of curly-ish, when she is happy.

Well, no. They're not human so their feelings, while similar, are not exactly the same (at least not from our reference). They use body language and tone of voice, much the same as we do.
