He thought they were super and wanted to show them off. Remember, Superman came to us back in 1938 and they didn't have red underwear back then, just tighty-whiteys.
It really must have caught on because soon Batman, Robin and Aqua-man started wearing their underwear on the outside. Ben Grimm, AKA " The Thing" liked it so much that for years he only wore his briefs and nothing else.

The best reason was given in the series Lois & Clark with Dean Cain - when he was first creating the costume with the help of his mum, she remarked "Well they won't be looking at your face!"

Because he pissed in his tights before going out and had to put something on to cover the stain, his underpants were all that were to hand, he put them on and no one noticed, or no one said anything so he carried on thinking he could be a fashion icon as well as a superhero, myself i think he looks like a ****.

Isn't it because he was a typical man and needed/wanted to wear them more than once? Perhaps he didn't have a washing machine to wash them???

he'd already turned them inside out and they were starting to smell. rather than take them, he wore them on the outside because he needed the support.
