This is much more common than most people think! The most likely explanation is that he is used to one kind of stimulation (his own), and his body is just not reacting as powerfully to new stimulation (yours).
Try politely asking him to show you EXACTLY how he does it -- speed, force, angle, duration, etc. -- and I think you will be surprised how successful you become!!
