I am sorry for your loss.

The Social Security Administration pays a small death benefit to help with funeral expenses, and I do mean small. Contanct the Soc Sec Admin office to apply.

If your cousin was at any time an employee of the state of Illinois, there may be a state death benefit. Veterans also have benefits - contact the Veterans Administration. If your cousin was employed, the employer may have provided life insurance, usually as a multiple of annual salary. If your cousin had health insurance (individual or through an employer), there may be a small death benefit, typically only $1,000 or $2,000. If your cousin died in an automobile accident, the automobile insurance policy may provide death benefits -- contact your cousin's agent. If you cousin had individual life insurance, the beneficiary can apply for those benefits by contacting the life insurance agent.

I'm sorry to hear that. You can try contacting the county he lived in--department of social services. Explain the situation. If that doesn't work, you may just have to work out a payment plan with the funeral home and cemetery. This happens all the time, believe me. There are very few people who have made their own funeral arrangements.
