I'm not a parent, but I check.
My nephews might visit. I consider it too much of a risk. I would not live within three or four blocks, probably less if the boys were older and wandering around.
I wouldn't ask the real estate agent, though. He or she only has to disclose things they KNOW about. And if nobody's checked lately, the agent can honestly say "not that we know of". You can access the National Sex Offender Registry here:

I'm not a parent, but I do check for the sex offenders in my area. Most states have a sex offender registry (it should be on your states department of corrections website). It will show you all sex offenders, including child sex offenders and your run of the mill pervert. I would suggest that everyone check for sex offenders in their area. That's why the created the registry. Most sites don't list the specific crimes, but they do differentiate b/w child sex offenders and violent sex offenders. They also include pictures of the offenders and their exact address.
I know some probation officers that let the neighbors know that a sex offender is living in the vicinity. They will do this if their is a child sex offender living around a family with young children.
They do have a national registry, but your state will probably have a more extensive and up to date list. Someone responded earlier saying that she makes sure her children are wary of all stranges...she's right. The most dangerous sex offenders are the ones that haven't been caught yet.

I did not ask my real estate agent but that is a good thought for the next house but I did go online and look first. I was shocked as to the locations in my area because the very nice house I wanted had two in the neighborhood.

Actually, my friend works for the police department and checks that for me on a daily basis. It's very important for us to protect our children. After all, we are the only ones who can. Most sex offenders purposly move into a neighborhood with lots of children and you never have a clue. By the way, there are 100 registered sex offenders within a 5 mile radius of my home. That is only the ones who have been caught. This is information available to us for a purpose and we need to access this information to make our children aware of what's going on. I also let the rest of the neighbors know as well. I'm sorry, but I would kill someone for hurting my child that way. Good luck

I check the website of my local sheriff department. They have the list for my entire state including pictures and where they work. I absolutely check if there are any in my area then I show my children their picture and tell them they are really bad people and to stay away from them. You cannot possibly keep all sex offender out of your areas but you can make your children safer by being better informed and keeping a better eye on them.

I've never moved anywhere at a time when that was important, and now that it is, I am established in my own home. I have, however, checked out the registry for this neighborhood and for my youngest daughters school area. Around her high school alone there are approxiamtely 12 offenders. Scary, isn't it? I know they must live, and live somewhere near other folks, but at least I know where THEY are and so does my daughter and her friends! Good question this morning!!

I am a parent and yes I always check. In my area they have a notification service that will e-mail you and let you know if a sex offender has moved within 5 miles from you. I always check on www.esorn.com you wouldn't believe how many are on there, its pretty scary to think of the vast number of them.

YES - Always!!! However, I teach my children (sadly these days) to be cautious of ALL strangers. I even point out situations where my kids could have been victims.
Example: if we are at the mall and my kids start to wonder off, or run behind clothes in a store, I will find a stranger and point them out and tell them that person could have taken them away, they should stay close to me.
I also let my kids see those videos and stories on the news of children being abducted. Unfortunately, these days, you can not be too careful. It seems to work....my daughter called her friends at school away from a construction worker who had been watching the girls for a few minutes and began walking towards them. Scary....but I am so proud of her!

I'm not even a parent and I check. I like to be familiar with the faces of sex offenders in my area to be better able to protect myself in the event I'm being followed or suspect I'm being followed. South Florida isn't a very safe place.

I check every week. We live in a fairly small town & I was stunned to learn that there are so many of them. Ohio has a web site set up by the Attorney General called esorn. It not only lists the names of the offender, but their address & crime as well. Our kids are too precious not to keep up to date on the activity of those that are trying to hurt them.
