I don't see why you should not try. The easiest would be a internet related business then you would not have to worry about ownership. Their internet is getting better and faster. There is a growing middle class in Thailand. Which means there are more women spending money. There are a number of trade shows in Thailand. April/October is a gift and houseware show at the Impact Center in Bangkok. This one is huge in 2 buildings, may take a couple days to see everything. November is the Beauty and Health show also at the Impact Center. In July there is a business and franchise expo at the Bitec Center in Bangkok.

If you are serious about a internet related business. There is www.thailandguru.com, he supposedly has been in Thailand since 1994 or so. Originally worked in the computer area and now has a business consulting company in Bangkok. He is originally from the United States. He might be someone to contact. At the least check out his website and read what he has to say about Thailand and doing business there.
All the other consultants just have an introduction and contact type website.

You might ask yourself why I know so much. Well, I fell in love with Thailand and I now have a girlfriend there. I am 52 and am working towards establishing something there eventually so that I could semi-retire there.

Good luck

It would be a great idea. However you must try and go into a business you know something about.Thailand is a very competitive place. There are a lot of smart people already doing business there. if its a bar type of business then try Pattaya or Patong on Phuket, If its a guest house try Chiang mai. 75K is not a lot of money in Thailand. Also there are many laws for foreigeners opening a business in Thailand. Its not that simple. I have been in Thailand for 32 years running various biz. I am a brit

Sure! But try teaching English first. Get acquainted with the customs and bureaucracy. See what opportunities are available. You won't get rich but you won't lose your capital either.

After teaching for a year or two, you should have a good idea whether or not you like Thailand, if the business climate is acceptable and whether or not you can find a business niche where you can be happy and at least moderately successful.

http://www.ajarn.com has plenty of English teaching info.

http://www.stamfordcollege.org is where I got my ESL teaching cert. Their training program is also a recruiting program.

You have to be real careful dealing with Thai people, Im Thai and still have to be careful... If they are not my friends or family, I'd not 100% trusted them... =)
I think you should ask your friends or people you know that have been living in Thailand long enough... And it'd be great if you have visited and stayed there for a few months before you decide to start a business, see if you like it or not.
Culture shocks and other bad feelings could happen.
Good luck anyway!!

=)

why? what kind of business? how are you going to get a visa to work? where's your capital investment coming from? how many people are you going to employ?

doesnt sound like much of a business plan if you dont even know what kind of business you want to open.
