We've used duct tape before but that is a PAIN when it comes to diaper changes because you have to use scissors. The best "trick" we found was to put footless one piece sleepers on them backwards & then put a safety pin across the top of the zipper so they can't unzip it (of course put it inside the pajamas). You may be able to use the footed one piece sleepers and put them on the right way & just use the safety pin across the top of the zipper too. GOOD LUCK!

Try putting the diaper on backwards so it tapes towards the back. I have used this before and it works. If he figures that out, I'd try some duct tape over the tabs.
Added - because he is taking his diaper off is not likely a sign he is ready for potty training. It is more common that this is just something he figured out how to do and he is quite pleased with himself that he can do something that gets quite a fun reaction from mom when he does it. Try this: Make this a "non-issue" between him and you. When he takes his diaper off, make no comment about it, just put a new one on and send him on his way with the request to, "Please keep your diaper on." Don't overdo it, but throughout the day give him a little hug and tell him, "Thanks for keeping your diaper on." when he keeps it on. I would say that he is most likely taking his diaper off because he is getting some kind of attention out of the behavior.

Get an extra set of sheets for his bed so you don't have to wash the bedding everyday. Wait until just before his bedtime to put on a pull up. Ask him frequently if he needs to go to the potty. It's been my experience that boys are easier to potty train than girls. If he's that determined to remove his diaper, then you shouldn't have a problem with potty training.

We used jump suits during that fascinating time. We have since started potty training, but contrary to a few other stupid comments here, it isn't necessarily time to start potty training. It is natural fascination. As far as they are concerned, they are doing nothing more offensive then picking their nose.
Potty training is not going to solve the problem overnight, so your are still going to need to keep that nappy on somehow. If the child is determined enough, he will work out how to take anything off. My daughter was fascinated with clips. clasps, buttons and zippers before she could walk. She would spend hours working out how all these things worked. She also painted with her pooh from time to time.
She has been potty training since 18 months now and soon lost fascination with the nappy thing. She still takes it off, but usually to go to the potty so we don't discourage it.
Good luck. And if you find the answer, let me know. I'll need it for the next one.

that is a very good question as my 2 year old does the same thing, but i am trying to potty train him now. He began taking off his diaper at the same age. Try a potty chair and the next time he takes it off, take him to it.

Maybe it's time to start the potty training process a bit early but what the heck he doesn't want to wear the diaper might as well give it a shot.

you may have to buy bigger onesies but if you sew the bottom closed and get them big ebough so you can pull them down. the ones that snap in the back of the neck may be the best ones

It sounds like the child is giving the signal . Ready to be potty taught". Show the child a teaching tape on going to the potty . the pictures will show what to do and how to do from start to finish.

Have you tried overalls? The other thing is, put him to bed in a sleeper - the zip up the front kind - ON BACKWARDS. You'll probably have to cut the part that ends up on the front of his neck a bit (the back collar). There's NO WAY he can unzip a sleeper, that's zipped up his back.

If its for his bed get some waterproof sheeting for under his sheet and also you can get those 'Pampers Change Mats' which are great for going on top of the sheet for those little accidents. Sound like he's ready for the potty though.
