Help me Ive recently been diagnosed with cancer?

I am only 22yrs old and in the US Air Force and have been recently diagnosed with cancer of the brain and spinal cord. Apparently it is bad enough that I have to have an operation to have two of them removed from the bottom of my brain stem where it meets my spinal cord. I am also staioned in Okinawa, Japan so I am a very long ways from my home and family and I am more terrified than I have ever been. The doctors have discussed sending me to San Antonio, Texas for the operation because it is to delicate for then to want to do here. I am frightened, Is there anyone out there maybe even any cancer survivors who can offer any words of encouragement

Hi Jerry, I'm in the middle of my cancer treatment. I'll give you some information that helped me..if you want to talk to a cancer survivor who had the same kind of cancer as you do and is a trained volunteer to help you with your questions, call 1-800-ACS-2345, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is called Reach for Recovery. You are never alone. You can visit the website on line at www.cancer.org to gather information. Let me know how it works out for you. When I was in the Navy I learned that courage is fear that has said it's prayers. We need to find a way to link you to us so you get our answers.

I understand your fear. While I've never had cancer, I had "a close call" last year--I'm 50. I can imagine what a weird feeling it must be to be so far away and hear something like that. I realize you probably went into your military career with dedication and the hope of "sticking to it". Ask the people there to send you to a hospital as close to your home as possible. You'll be around your family and friends. If possible, you might be able to return to active duty after the docs do what they can do. I call it "staying between the piano keys"--if something really good comes of something, you can be exstatic. If not, you're not "ready to go over the barrel" because you had your hopes too high. Good luck to ya!
