Cardiologist - The Heart Doctor:

A doctor who specializes in preventing and treating heart disease is known as a cardiologist.

Cardiology is the subspecialty of internal medicine concerned with the functioning of the heart, blood vessels and circulation of blood throughout the body. It may also encompass evaluation of the lungs.

Angioplasty and stent placement for peripheral arterial occlusive disease has traditionally been performed by radiologists and surgeons. However, cardiologists have recently begun to perform these procedures. It is unknown whether this has affected how often the procedure is done.

Wages: Separate wage information is not available for cardiologists. Cardiologists belong to the broader occupational category of "physicians." Nationally, the median income for physicians (after expenses) is about $164,000 per year. Earnings vary according to specialty, years of experience, and hours worked. Average salaries for medical residents range from $34,100 to $42,100 per year.
