Maybe my story will help. I found myself just as mixed up about faith and prayer after I lost my nine year old son to juvenile diabetes and 3 years later my husband passed away from a sudden and mysterious blood infection. I prayed, and sought spiritual guidance through out that time only to feel angry, hurt, betrayed and forsaken. I continued to feel that way for several years, and couldn't seem to get out a a horrible rut. I became addicted to pain medication and was a not so good mom, friend, daughter, etc. My whole world was very small and grim.
Finally my life became so unmanageable that I decided to reevaluate my faith. After doing so, I must tell you it seems like mountains have moved. I have learned to understand, that as you say, what is destined to happen will happen no matter how hard we pray or how in touch with our Higher Power we are, however, once I let prayer come back into my life I am strong and confident enough to tolerate things that would have crumbled me 4 years ago.(and believe me my plate is full, lol)
Short answer, we pray to include our Higher Power into our life and give us strength and guidance to cope with what is meant to be.

There are a number of reasons why we pray, one of them is because God tells us to. We may not fully understand the workings of the spiritual realm so by faith we trust God that that is what we are to do.
We pray to get to know God. It is interaction wih God in prayer that is like getting to know a close friend, just by interacting with them.
We pray because even though God has a plan which will be accomplished He has also ordained the means by which that plan is done, and prayer is a part of the means.
We pray beause that is what gives us peace in or hearts and minds, as God has stated in Philipians 4.

There are several instances in the bible of prayer changing the outcome. Now perhaps God knew that the prayer would pray, but then he does give us free will.
Here is a great link to the very question that you have, and a great answer.

We pray because we don;t want to accept that everything happens between a combination of personal Choice, and chance. Praying helps us cope.
I;d also like to add that praying for events to happen or not happen is Hippocritical. If you beleive that god has a plan for all of us, by praying you are quesitoning gods plan and claiming to know better than he.
Which means either you don't beleive god is controlling everything, so praying is useless. Or you do beleive god has a plan for all of us, and by praying you are showing you DON'T have faith in gods plan.. So at best it's worthless, and at worst it will cause you to go to hell.

It is said that even before you were born, God knows everything about you. Even before you want to open your mouth to pray, God knows what you want to pray for.
But let's understand what is going on. First, God created man so that man can share with God his blessed life. For this reason God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church.
So, how can you seek God, know God and love God with all your strength if you don't communicate with God? Therefore this communication with God is called Prayer. When we pray we are actually answering God's calling us to draw closer to Him.
Isn't it beautilful that prayer is our answer to God as God the Father finds his lost children. Some ignore him, some don't understand why they should answer him, some were playing hide and seek and there are some who answers God and follows him.

cause praying is a way to speak to ourselves.
Some neurologists studied the cerebral areas involved during buddhists prayers and meditation and the results suggest that there are some areas that activate and determine a wellbeing status.
when we pray we wake some deep parts of our mind and our ego....
God is not a problem... philosophers and scientists had killed him some centuries ago (read Nietzsche or Feuerbach and something about neuroscience...our soul is inside our skull...ehehe)

We pray to God because he wants acknowledgement. Just as you or I would want someone to thank us or compliment us, he wants the same in return. The main theme of prayer is our vital connection with God as Lord and Savior, and His empowering us for all we do in life. He is sovereign; He directs our lives as well as the rest of the universe, so we must get in tune with Him. We must lean on and dwell in Him so we are infused with His Way rather than clouded and distracted by our ways or the ways of the world.

I pray because I have a real, thriving relationship with Jesus Christ and God the Father. God wants to hear from us, He wants us to pour out our hearts to him, He wants to meet our needs. He is listening to us. His mind can be changed if we pray. It is not about "religion" - it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ - that is why we pray - asking God for healing, to change us inside, many many other things. He is listening and He wants that right relationship with us through Jesus. Of course He knows everything - He is God - but He loves us and wants to hear from us. I hope this helps.

Yeah, if god pre-plans the lives of all humans, then serial killers are merely acting out god's will, so how are they evil? The bible says on numerous occasions that prayers are answered, but this is clearly not true. Either the bible is fiction, or it is a lie.
