My husband's grandparents are very healthy eaters and it shows: Granddad is 94 years old, and Grandma is 88 years old living an active, healthy, and happy life together!
How & Why, you might ask?
1. They eat little to NO SODIUM added to their foods and EAT A VERY HIGH FIBER DIET. They use real butter, sparingly! NOT hydrogenated vegetable oil spreads.
2. They eat MUESLIX cereal with milk or lactaid milk nearly every morning to start their day. If you can't eat it plain like this (I can't stand the taste), try adding it to your favorite cereal, since eating some is better than none.
3. They drink freshly squeezed orange juice picked from their backyard tree, when in season... otherwise, they drink store bought OJ nearly everyday. Just about half a cup, not much.
4. They eat a SMALL breakfast in the morning (8 am), they eat a BIG meal for lunch (around 1 pm), and little to NOTHING for dinner in the evenings ===> This was suggested by their doctor. They've been eating this way for many years.
5. They take walks almost everyday... even if it is only to walk around their neighborhood one time around (standard block, takes about 20 minutes to walk it). Or if weather is foul, then they will walk on a treadmill for about 10-20 minutes on regular walking pace or do some sort of chore around the house that makes them get up and move!
6. They eat LOTS of FRUIT & VEGETABLES. All kinds! Usually with meals OR as a snack during the late afternoons before 6 pm. After 6 pm, they don't eat anything!
7. Throughout the day, and in the evenings they only DRINK water, a little bit of DIET 7-up/Sprite/Sierra Mist, or Fruit Juice (orange, cranberry, mango, apple, grape, etc.) AND in the evenings when thirsty. Only about one to two cups per serving.
7. They very rarely snack on junk food. That isn't to say that they don't eat their fare shares of donuts, cakes, pies, etc... it's just that they only eat those types of foods sparingly (like one-two times a week).
8. They eat meats like steaks, chicken, and turkey; and even seafood like shrimp, fish, crab legs, lobster, etc. regularly, but ONLY in SMALL PORTIONS (like the size of their palm).
9. They eat Uncle Bens white rice regularly with meals. Again, in small portions = palm sized.
10. They DON'T SMOKE! They VERY RARELY DRINK ALCOHOL! (Only on special occasions: weddings, parties, etc.)
11. They take trips regularly out of state, usually every other month and mostly on Cruises. They like experiencing new adventures!
12. They are avid READERS and TV Viewers!
This just about sums up how they live their daily healthy lives, and motivates me and my family to live a more healthly lifestyle! Ok, so I can't give up the potato chips and french fries, but I do TRY to maintain as many of these tips on a daily basis. I hope they are of help to you and others who may read this.

It was taught at one time that a healthy breakfast consists of: fruit (vitamins & minerals), cereal (grains), milk (calcium, Vit. D, protein), eggs (protein), bread (carbohydrates) and butter (a little fat), with sometimes a little ham or bacon thrown in as a bit of a treat. You don't have to eat massive qualities of these things, but if you have them daily then you'll be eating will.
About cereal, avoid the ones that are loaded with sugar. Whole grain cereals are the best and they actually do taste better.
About butter, not more than about one tablespoonfull. Butter is fat. We need fat in our diet, but not a ton of it.
You can substituted fruit juice for fresh fruit if you want to.
Use low fat (2%) milk instead of whole milk. There's hardly a difference in taste between the two types.
If you have a healthy breakfast, make sure that your other meals are also healthy. And if you snack in between times, choose fresh fruit over sweets. Watch out for all those "energy" bars though, since they tend to have a high fat content (read the label) and the energy they give you doesn't last very long. At the same time, it's OK to have a sweet treat every now and then. Nobody every died from a piece of their favorite candy or from some ice cream or cake. We have to live too. Even diabetics will sneak a piece of chocolate every so often.

Breakfast: Try to have lots of nutrients and fibers and fruits. Eat Cheerios, Raison Bran, Total, or anything of that sort. Oatmeal is also good. And once a week, if you like hot breakfasts, you could have like a 2 egg omelet with a bunch of veggies with a small slice of bread. Dinner: Try to go half-vegatarian. Eat small portions of meats only 3 times a week. Eat lots of veggies and stay away from the bread and potatoes. Also, you should eat at least 4-6 times because eating 3 big meals isn't good for you. Try making your meals smaller and have 2 snacks like fruits or even those 100 calorie packs.

Well breakfast is very important for jump starting your metabolism for the day. So its not overly important what you eat, as long as its somewhat decent food. Egg,cheese, bacon sandwhich is a good breakfast starter. Some cereals are also good choices and its hard to go wrong with fruit.
I personally eat 2 breakfasts. First one 6:30am (egg sandwhich, or muffin, or a bowl of mixed fruit) Then I eat a piece of fruit a couple hours later.

Whole grain wheat cereal (i.e. Cheerios) with juice or fruits.
I keep ti pretty light. Some days I may have wheat toast an an egg. :) Remember, breakfast is the most important meal of a diet. If you skip on breakfast, your entire metabolism will operate differently. GOOD LUCk!
