He'd still be the greatest but with less exposure. America's the biggest market in boxing.

Good question, the problem is that Ali encompassed a time, a society in turmoil and fighting for there rights, so great fighter that he was, he was about much more than boxing, he was uniquely of an America struggling to come to terms with itself.
Much like the Beatles were of 60s Britain, they wouldn't mean as much now, but the encompass everything that was the 60s as it is

Muhammad Ali, regardless of where he was from, will always ,and quite rightly, be remembered as the greatest boxer of all time because that is exactly what he was.

He would be known as the greatest heavyweight from a purely boxing standpoint. His status as an American icon would not exist. His legend has a lot to do with his stand against the Vietnam War and the United States Government.

Doubt it. America is boxing's biggest audience, and they are particularly parochial. Look at Calzaghe, one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world over the last decade, and is hardly recognised in the states.
