Currently, there is an "epidemic" of obese people, both adults and children in the UK. I believe the American culture of "lets have lots of fatty, premature death causing junk, and lets have it now" to be one of the leading factors.
I don't think you can call British food bland, not when America's most popular dish is a burger in a tasteless plastic bun, with the same plastic and wilted salad. Given a choice, I'd rather eat the wrapper it came in.

It's not that bland. It's not the best food in the world though. You do get Obese people in England.

Personnally, i love food in England. And I come from a country with great food (Greece, and in fact my family came from Asia Minor). But in England you can really find any sort of food, of any provenance. I gained 10 kilos in a year that I lived there. Traditional english food is also great, but don't look for it in London.

You obviously didn't have a good experience of UK food - some of it is lovely so I just think you must of been unluck in what you had to eat. And, for your information, there are obese people in the UK.
