When you save the file using the microsoft works, it will give you options as to which type to save it as. Save it as. txt .
When you open the file using Word, the program will also ask you what format did you save the file youwant to open.

I have always thought Word can open a Works document since they are both made by Microsoft. Try it again.

Or simply get the student edition of Microsoft Office from your college and download it at your home computer. You will be using more than the Word part of it.

If you saved a copy at home, resave it in the RTF format (Rich Text Format). It can then be opened by any wordprocessing programme.

You probably need to go back to MSWorks and SaveAs... .rtf which is the right choice for the best possibilties to interchange files between softwares.
