Befor you "get up on the Pipes" you need to be proficient on a practice Chanter. The Chanter is the piece attached to the pipes where the piper's fingers actually play the required notes.Practice chanters vary in price. You can buy some inexpensive ones on ebay BUT i would find a tutor first in your local area and see what he/she recommends.Hope this helps.

You will need to buy a practice chanter. There are wooden chanters for about 200 dollars at the most but a plastic chanter is the way to go if you are just starting out.if you are serious about learning to play the pipes take lessons.but when you need to get the pipes get Mccallums, Nail, Welsh and Dunbar are just some of the many.the cheapest price for a good set is anywhere around $800 and up.If you start with a band they probably get them for you.Make sure you don't get Coccus wood, plastic, rosewood for the full set of bagpipes.sometimes it is cheaper to get a used set but make sure there is no damage to the pipes when you get them used or new.usually when you get a set of new bagpipes there is usually at least a 2 year warranty.but to answer your question start out with a plastic practice chanter.the practice chanter is where the notes are played.wheni first started 2 years ago my practice chanter was 50 dollars and i still use the same one.you don't need a really expensive chanter it is just to learn and memorize the tunes on.but after about a year you will need a full set of pipes.

Yes, a practice chanter is how you learn the bagpipes. Similar in appearance to a recorder. There are good ones and bad ones. Expect to pay around $100 for a good one. Cheap ones can often times not be played.

It's very important to get yourself an instructor otherwise in a couple of years you might look back and say "I could never get the hang of that thing."

There's an excellent site with lots of beginner bagpipes information. Terminology, finger positions, how to find and evaluate an instructor, tons of stuff:

JB1 got it... a practice chanter... the flute-like instrument that plays the "melody" of the bagpipes.

I bought one years ago... and could never get the hang of it !! I was a baritone/ trumpet player and can't seem to use TWO hands to play !!

Good luck... and just don't practice near MY home !!
