Emission controls will not function properly. I think it is best trying to replace the parts in the fuel injection system and keeping the mixture correct to keep the cat converter. Did you ever think you might want a newer than 19 year old car?

You could prolly buy a 1975 Beetle for less than that conversion, then you would have an Aireated Injection with a Carb. The 300series motors are Porche/Bosche motors, they are all fuel injected to some degree, as well they are all airated to some degree. But why destroy an original when you can just buy another original.

Even though I know that 1988 is the most collectible year in VW history and you may kill a couple trees, whales, elfs, etc who cares it's his car. If you want to do it then knock yourself out. Check out http://forums.vwvortex.com/ those guys should be able to help you out.
