If you are trying to save money, go to your local flooring store and ask if they will sell you last year's samples. My father-in-law did this and got tons of different colored squares of carpet - he laid out a pattern of colors and glued them down with carpet glue. He saved the left overs in case a portion of carpet gets ruined. His rec room is so cool and they get tons of compliments about the flooring! I hope yours turns out great! God bless!!!

I made cheap plywood look like a hardwood floor. I drew boards on the plywood using a sharpie fine tip marker 8 inches wide and random lenghts. Then I stained the wood, and polyurethaned. Time consuming yes but in the long run cheap. It has held up well for 15 years and I have had to tell people that is fake they cant tell the difference

The problem with this is, it's going to come loose, tear or wear?

Your asking cheap, this is what your going to get, cheap. In the first place, get a lino from your local vinyl store. They always have a cheap grade, it won't last, that's the guarantee your going to get. But, it will be cheap. Have a couple of friends help you lay it, it's not hard, try and get a good glue, you have to spend money somewhere.
