Going by scripture, works alone do not suffice and belief in G-d and Jesus is required, but it is G-d's call whether you go to Hell or not- it is not for me or anyone else on this board to judge based on scripture or not. As for Hell... scriptures tell us that hell is "the second death" in the "lake of fire" and "everlasting punishment" not everlasting punishing. That means a permanent, albeit not ongoing, punishment. In a sense, it is death after death and a death by fire. The idea of an ongoing eternal burning comes from Dante's Allighieri's divine comedy and from the parable of Lazarus and the rich man where the rich man is tormented in the flame. Notice that the passage does not say I am tormented in this flame forever and will be so for all eternity. It just says "I am tormented in this flame". The idea of eternal torture is horrible so it serves the interests of those that would have you obey G-d based on fear rather than faith, as if death by fire was not fearsome enough.

The question of all questions. A question wondered by millions but only asked by a few.

I presume when you say an eternity burning you mean figuratively,...Yes it could be possible if you spend the rest of your life worrying about not believing.

You say that you consider yourself a good normal bloke and not harming your fellow human being and so I ask what more do you require. We are taught that we should do unto others as we would have them do unto you.

An ambiguos answer from someone who feels the same as you.

Hi, look most people have got the wrong idea entirely about Hell, the first misconception is that God sends us to Hell and this is not the case, let me explain.
Hell is that place and state of rejection of God and this rejection is our free will decision on earth, if we spend the life God has given us in complete denial of His love and dominion over us we effectively are making a statement of free choice, and after death this free choice decision cannot be changed.
it determines how we continue for eternity and therefore as we will be much more aware of ourselves and the consequences of actions, then we will know in an instant with crystal clarity that we do not belong among the saints and our rejection of God means we have in fact become God`s adversary and so it follows that Heaven is not our rightful abode.
now this is very important, you say that you have hurt no one and basically you are a good person and this is true, but what you are saying in fact if you really think about it is that you are the sole power of this decent attitude and you are good by your own authority, and this is the root of many downfalls because we can only do good by the power of God`s grace working within us,as God is the author and giver of all graces.
so you see you are not good of yourself and this is deniel in itself of God from whom all good things come.
now I know that you probably have never thought that this was so many of us failed to see this truth at sometime in our lives,I too was unaware of this fact at one time, yet nevertheless the fact remains.
we all have had issues with accepting the reality of God at some stage in life but it almost always comes down to our prideful ego`s, we cannot dictate our terms for believing in God, it is always a matter of acceptance or denial, but some of us really need the humility to come before God in a heart felt plea and simply ask Him to help our unbelief and stubborness of heart.
just to do this much would be a humble declaration of God`s rightful authority and could not fail to get a response from God.
Ihope this will be of some help to you, and please do not be offended as I have tried to be straight with you and intend no offence.
prayerful best wishes to you and yours.

There is no such place as hell. So No you are not going to hell.

Nutty religions used the idea to scare people to go to church confess their sins etc.

The word 'hell' in the old testament - Sheol-
and -hades- in the new testament both have been mistranslated. They are not literal places. They simply mean - mankinds common grave- the place we all end up.
If any Christians disagree with this then why did Jesus go to hell? He went to the place of death.

Its states clearly in the bible that God's punishment for disobeying him was simply death. This makes sense, since it was God who gave life he has the right to take it away.

Are the Wicked Punished in an Ever-burning Hell?
"It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire-where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched' " (Mark 9:47-48).
Did Jesus here warn of an eternal punishment in hellfire?
The words in the phrase hell fire, above, are translated from the Greek word gehenna. Jesus here referred to the valley of Hinnom, just outside of Jerusalem. In His day this area was a garbage dump in which fires burned constantly, fueled by trash and the dead bodies of animals and criminals.
Jesus used this desolate and miserable place as symbolic of the fate of unrepentant sinners. Notice that Jesus says the worm does not die, not that the people punished in hellfire do not die. The punishment is eternal, meaning that it is permanent and complete. But this does not mean that the incorrigible are kept alive and tortured by a vengeful God.
Burned remains of the bodies in the original gehenna, the Valley of Hinnom, decomposed and were infested with maggots. The fire was not extinguished-it burned as long as there was trash to keep it burning-and the maggots (the "worms" of Mark 9:48) were not destroyed. Maggots are the wormlike larvae of flies. Flies swarm over the decaying refuse and keep it continuously infested with maggots. Then, instead of dying, those creatures turn into more flies in a continuing cycle.
The bodies of animals and people thrown into gehenna, however, either decayed or burned up and, of course, were eventually completely consumed. Similarly, unrepentant sinners will not be tormented forever; they will be completely and eternally destroyed in the lake of fire, referred to in Revelation 20:14.

Some beleive hell is living on earth or being married. Spend some time learning about other RELIGIONS (plural).

Ask yourself how you can believe in hell if you do not beleive in god?

Perhaps you have lost your faith in god but still beleive he exists. Perhaps you should explore other ethnic avenues for your spiritual quest. Nonetheless, education is key. I suggest you explore your options, experiment with other religions, learn, discover and good luck.

there are many levels of heaven and hell we all live in one or the other after we die ,we are sorted like wheat and chaff ,like sheep and goats and end up where we deserve ,you having good works will end up in either thelower heavens or the higher hells
the higher hells are only to teach you ,prepare you for heaven
the lowest hells are for the evil people, those who choose to do real bad things or get others to do bad things ,but a good person will have a good after life
just knowing there is a god you can call on him ,believe in him now or later it is better that till you feel you want to know him you just try to be good and dont denie him
its when you start saying and leading others away from god that the lower hells claim you ,but your belief is between him and you.
to burn in hell you have to have done real evil ,killed or other real discusting things ,just dont deniec god and he wont deney you.
joining a belief just because you want to be saved is wrong you must join belief to know god ,some just read the books ,others live by gods rules ,we all have heard what they are.

The way I see it is....If you were God, and you sent all your children to school....One of your children goes off into the woods and doesn't come back. One day you meet again, you say, "Hey, what the hell man? What's your deal? Why did you leave and forget about me?" He/she says, "Well, it seems I was confused at that moment. But everything is clear now."
What would you do to your child?
Me, I wouldn't do a damn thing. I'd hold them in my arms and be happy their back.
You could probably even apply that to any situation that could possibly occur on earth, even murder. I for one believe no one is going to Hell. It doesn't make any sense to. That doesn't give you any reason to do your worst will you're here, though.

You say you don't believe in God. Have you ever gone out of you way to get to know him? Watch the sunrise, see how the leaves are changing colour, stand outside on a starry night and try to count them. Its beautiful. This is the world my God created. He gives us all a chance to know Him if we only ask. Get yourself to a good 'lively' church, they are even held in pubs sometimes you know! The God I know is awesome, give Him a chance. Yes - the bible says non believers will perish so best hurry! See yeh.
