The checks and balances of our governmental system will not allow them to do this unilaterally. The can apply pressure and have more ability to control the debates on what will be done but they still do not have the 2/3 to 3/4 majority needed to do things by themselves, they will need Republican cooperation.

OK, heres the real deal ok?
A)The Democrats are going to spend the first 90 days trying to figure out just how badly the Republicans screwed up. It might even take 6 months, ok?
B)Then, they're going to start withdrawing troops, and hopefully the final troop withdrawl will happen right before the 2008 election.
C)Then, all hell in the middle east is going to happen- without a military presense, either Syria, or Iran or possibly both will then attack Iraq.
D)Then, we're going to return, except this time we won't have the manpower to back it up, which will in turn cause a draft of every available male between the ages of 18 and 24.

It is not going to be that quick or that easy. First, the new Secretary of Defense needs to be approved. Then he needs to propose his new strategy for Iraq, which then needs to be approved and implemented. I'm guessing if his strategy is a withdrawal of troops, the implementation will take some time. It will probably be done in parts, through an extended period of time.

Well first they'll need to get that beyond Bush, which will NEVER happen. Second, how does anyone figure that there's not already chaos in the middle east? America's presence there isn't doing anything but provoking a civil war, and creating more Islamic extremists. If chaos were to erupt even more there now, we'd HAVE to do something about it because we're already there. Whereas, if anything were to happen while we're not there, how is that our problem? I mean, gosh, we didn't join WWII until it was years in now did we?

They need to pressure Iraqi gov hard and try to have them make political compromises and take other actions that will reduce secretarian violence. GOP will critize democrat for anything below freakin utopia in Iraq and democrat will likely to do some nitty grity grunt work through deplomatical/politcal means to bring troops home with realistic goals.

No, because a) the president is still a Republican, and b) most Democrats also voted to send troops there, and a few months ago, in a nonbinding vote, most of them voted to keep them there.
