It expands into "Disk operating system". This required minimum resources like ram and clock speed, processor etc. It is now mostly that window based s/w r used requiring huge resources. The silver lining is that the hardware resources have become dirt cheap and becoming cheaper day by day.

The only DOS I know is actually Disk Operating System. This was how computers would work in the pre-windows era. It is a character-based operating system.
