In the past in Australia we needed to place a contactor before the drive because you couldn't use electronics to isolate the motor and it wouldn't be classed as off without the contactor. Whats the UK regulations or standard?

In the UK you need an isolator, not a contactor. It should be lockable. The point is that you can isolate the VF drive from its supply if you needed to open it up or work on it.

The NEC in the States has the same requirement for the same reason. I would be surprised, indeed, if the UK had a less rigid standard. (I don't know about UK codes, just wanted to mention this point of agreement between US and Australian codes.)
