Remember there is a new airport in bangkok now. The old airport (don muang) has closed. A taxi to petchburi road from the new airport with road tolls plus the new airport taxi surcharge of 50 baht will cost 350 baht. However why not take a bus from the airport to down town for 50 baht and a tuk tuk from the train staion for 60 baht,

In my experience it's a fact that Thai people will try to get more for the same thing from foreigners, as they would from Thais. It's happened countless times with me and my Thai girlfriend. They see foreigners as having money because they are able to travel, hence the fact they will normally ask a bit more. Learn a few words of Thai would be my tip - they really, really appreciate it and it works wonders.
The whole journey for 230 baht (inc. the 60 baht tolls and 50 baht airport surcharge) sounds very cheap to me because it's based on distance, although there is also a time factor that kicks in if you're stuck in the traffic and not moving.

300-400 baht is the right amount (for 30-45 minutes ride) - you were not ripped off - especially if you used the taxi meter. Remember they tack on an extra 50 baht for AP pickup. The thai guy maybe told you he paid less to make him feel better or smarter than you - or maybe he went at a lower traffic hour and took less time.

Have your thai friend write down the address in Thai and teach you to tell the taxi driver in Thai like... Pai... (go to...)
and dont believe him when he said the meter is broken, just say Mai Pai (Im not going), Kob Khun (Thank you) and then take another one.
There are millions of taxis in Bangkok, you'll be able to find a good driver!!
Good luck and have fun in Thailand!!
=)

at present day line distance is around 8km yet time on the line would be somewhat awhile. Ratchadaphisek Rd is in the direction of the northern area of Bangkok, previously the previous international airport, whilen you're observing Khao San Rd to the west of the city centre. even though Ratchadaphisek could be of interest as there are various vacationer institutions alongside the line. nighttime existence is considerable too, and you get greater interior reach flavours than at Khao San.

7 euro for a taxi ride! Cheap, I'd be happy to pay double. You could always walk. The bloke is only trying to earn a living - do you want to deny him this?
