They are important because they inform the students about their position in a class in summary. That means it evaluates a students progress and is the best evaluative tool. Remmeber grades are a total result of all the assessment tasks that students have completed so they have the right to be worried. It should be a real worry if some tampering has taken place. I believe that is the BIG worry students have.

Grades are important because students need to get an adequate GPA in order to pass on to the next grade, but often too much importance is placed on a letter grade. I once knew a person who was very knowledgeable about the Civil War, yet he received a C- in a college course he took. However, I believe his views contradicted those of his professor, which means he received a lower score in this class. Sometimes I noticed college professors would ding students just because they did not have the same point of view, which is a little sad because the entire point of education is for people to develop their own opinions. The best teachers will encourage their students to learn as much as they can and to develop their own stance about issues such as global warming and politics. Thus, if you learned something it is probably better to take a lower grade than merely regurgitating a lecture just so you can get an A.

Grades are like hoops to get to the next level. If you don't want to go for a higher level of education, grades are not so important. Employers rarely look at grades. For example, If you apply for McDonalds, do they ask for your GPA.
