Hi, I live in Staten Island NY. I would like to know how I can become a boxer. Do you know of any good gyms that I can go to? Any people I could talk to in the New York area? Any free place were I can train? Any information at all will be appreciated :-)

I keep hearing about the YMCA but I cannot afford it. I asked them one time about their fees and they were out of this world! To high! I had heard something about if you can't afford the YMCA that it would be free? I think only for kids right? I'm 24 years old. Do you know if its also free for me? Thanks again.

If you are young enough, there are probably free gyms for various youth groups. It's a shame there's no boxing in your school. If there is, that should function as sufficient introduction to the sport.

Interesting question: are there boxing scholarships to college?

Try the YMCA again and ask about their Strong Kids scholarships, which are available to anyone with an expressed need, no matter what age. Both Ys on Staten Island will be good for working out, but maybe not so much for hard-core boxing training.

Im 25 and i just started 4 months ago....look online for gyms in the local area, and then just show up and talk to the owner....they will pair u up with a trainer and you pretty much show up every day and they teach you.....they also tell you what equipment you need. i only pay $25/month......there probably isnt a place to train for free, cuz the trainers have to get paid.

Put some boxing gloves on and step in the ring against an opponent.
