No. Americans do not a passport to visit Canada right now, but this is set to change. Two dates are important for travelers to know:
1. June 1, 2009, which is when the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require American citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by land or water. (The June 1st date was previously January 1, 2008).
2. January 8, 2007, which is when the the WHTI will require American citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by air. So, all airports in Canada will ask to see passports from all people traveling from outside of Canada, including from the US, as of January 8, 2007.
I suggest she get one just in case you never know when you will get sick or hurt.

We live in Montreal and travel to New York State and Vermont Sate often to visit family. We don't have our Passports yet but we will be getting them (only because we plan to travel to Ireland next year)
If you have one - you can't go wrong by bringing it. But for now it's not obligatory. You will need proper identification (driver's license or birth certificate)
***VERY IMPORTANT Be sure you have a letter from your spouse allowing you to bring your child across the border!!! That they are VERY vigillant about!!

Not yet but soon you will have to. If you do want to cross the border make sure you have several forms of ID with you. You will especially need some form of picture ID, like a driver's license. And remember to be plesant with the border guards on both sides of the border. They are only doing their jobs, which is to keep you safe.

Yes, in 2007 you will definitely need it.
My husband travels to Canada all the time, and he uses his passport to avoid hassles.

No. When you cross the boarder you just have to declare that you are a US citizen. No paperwork needed.
