EDIT: To the guy below, no. That's not correct. If you lent me your car for the day. I could not take out an insurance policy on it. You could add me as a named driver on YOUR policy but that's all you could do. You bought the car, I have no financial interest in it.

Look at it this way. If I borrowed your car for the day, took out comprehensive insurance and crashed itI could in theory get paid out for the value of the vehicle. And that's why you can't insure something you don't own. That's what insurable interest is and that's why your comment is wrong.

I disagree with the end of Dan J's answer. If someone lends you something on the understanding (which would probably be implied, even if not expressly agreed) that you are responsible for it while it's in your care) then you would have to compensate the owner for any damage to it, and that would give you an insurable interest.
