Hello Everyone,

Heres my problem, i'm in absolute agony, my doc has prescribed me with some anti-biotics, but i'm off to Holland for the England friendly on tuesday, i will be drinking when i'm there which is very ill advised by my doc.

I am to take 2 pills a day.

If i took 3 a day my dosage would be complete just in time for me to go... will i be ok?

I can't even give up the trip and the agony is not something that would hospitalise me so thats not a worry.

I can't give up the trip even if i wanted to... only 2 of us going Tues-Fri, some more people coming over for the match on wed so i couldn't leave my mate there by himself.

The anti-biotic is Doxycycline. 100mg x twice daily.

No: The extra antibiotic will just go to waste, apart from maybe making you feel even sicker. It is supposed to be poisoning the bacteria that are making you bad, but it is no use you taking it faster than they can absorb it. Also, it is likely to wipe out the symbiotic bacteria that your gut needs to digest properly, giving you the squits big time. Alcohol neutralises a lot of antibiotics, giving the infection a fresh start, with germs that you have just selected for antibiotic resistance, so you will need an even longer course of pills to get yourself right. Finish your pills and lay off the drink, like the doctor said.

Actually, as a retired nurse, I would say that you should take it as prescribed by your physician. However, technically, if you squeeze 10 days of antibiotics into 6-7 days, I can't see where it could really hurt you. You might get a good case of diarrhea and I think it's better than stopping the meds all together. Do a little research online for dosages. I'm sure that that particular can be given in larger amounts. Godloveya.

G'day Dave G,

Thank you for your question.

I would take your doctors advice. The antibiotics should work but they might not clear it up in time. Then you will have real problems.

Its a wrench I know but I'd give up the trip. Theres no point in getting sick again while in another country. If you are still in agony, the trip will be no fun at all.

Last year, I was hospitalised in Australia and missed the cricket test against South Africa. It was a shame but your health comes first.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards

<>The time frame is as, if not more, important as the dosage. If you are to take them for 10 (or 14, or whatever the prescription) days, then do what the doctor says. Lay off the booze and take care of your body. It's the only one you've got!

It may make you sick if you put too much in your body too quickly.
That's why the doc prescribes you that amount, if he thought you could bettre by taking more he would have told you that. Just do what the Doc tells you ok. Go and ask your chemist that question

If you up your dosage and taking the meds for a shorter period of time, you could actually be making the bacteria more resistant to the infection, not to mention, you could be overdosing yourself or setting yourself up for a surperinfection. Don't do it! This is why we have MRSA, VRSA, etc

I can see that you don't want to put off your trip, but you can choose not to drink. It just takes a bit of backbone. I agree with previous answers, don't play with your health.
