The best for what? Which silat?
There are many silat, with vastly differing styles. To correct jezz88, silat is not from Malaysia or any one country. Southeast Asian countries did not exist when silat was first developed. Silat originated in the Malay archipelago, which now includes Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia & Brunei.

If you are talking about being the best in a street fight, then most silat, once mastered, are excellent. If you look past the dance-like movements, silat is quite well-suited to street fighting. Yes, it's very brutal.

I have a more practical view of "best". Most silat place a lot of emphasis on the art, on the dance-like movements. Being a busy, married working man, I don't have time to learn & practice all the art movements. I think the best martial art would be something that I can master and practice with a busy schedule and is versatile enough to be used in all situations. After all, any martial art is useless in self-defense if you can't maintain your skills.

There are probably many arts that focus only on self defence, but I know of only 2: aikido and silat cekak. My vote would be for silat cekak, mostly because I'm Malay. Ethnic pride and all that. :-)

So in a roundabout way, yes, silat is the best in the world.

The ones that they show in competitions are very very tone down. The competitions doesn't really give silat any justice at all. I feel Silat should stop being just a sport in SEA Games & international silat competition & be more professional maybe doing silat without the whole gear. But honestly if they ever went professional, I'm sure the death rate would be pretty high because the Silat's moves could cause instant death. Silat is definitely more artistic than most martial arts. An art of war, so to speak since its been used for hundreds of years by Indonesians,Malays & Filipinos for wars. Silat does have much better defensive than other martial arts & its attack can bring sudden death.

I recommend you watch this videos.

Interesting question. One could ask, why does spirituality use love to hate? Most religions have edicts such as, Thou shalt not kill, or, Love thy neighbor, yet history shows us these impossible to misunderstand directives have been grossly misused or ignored. The crusades attempted to exterminate those in conflict with the Pope. Currently there are those in the middle east that believe their God will welcome them with open arms and dancing girls for eternity if they kill for the right reason. If that isn't evil, I don't know what is. Have you ever heard the term, "necessary evil"? "The art of war is of vital importance to the state. It is a matter of life and death, a road to safety or ruin, hence, under no circumstances may it be neglected." (Sun Tzu) Suppose someone has your mom, daughter or girlfriend, they are unarmed, a deranged look on their face indicating they are not thinking rationally, and state they will do harm if you come any closer saying they will break their neck. You have a gun, but are 15 feet away, and have determined they mean it. What do you do? You aren't the one being assaulted, there is no imminent danger to your own life. The distance dictates hitting them with the gun is not an option, they can kill before you take 2 steps. You are a good shot, have the gun aimed, and they are holding your loved one in such as manner that you have a clean shot, unfortunately, a head shot, which means you most likely will have to embrace evil and go on the attack, or, defense, and possibly die with your loved one. "Sometimes a good offense is the best defense." You haven't made it clear when you have seen these trained "martial artists" just initiate attack, or the circumstances. If you have witnessed a situation in a bar, where two idiots are arguing, one attacks and the attack indicates training, that person may have martial arts training, but that doesn't make them an artist. Or, it could well be the "attacker" correctly analyzed the situation and took the initiative, and possibly kept it from escalating into a more grisly encounter. Martial Arts, or Spirituality, do not change people. They offer a path to a possible enlightenment. Why do priests get busted molesting boys? They prey on the helpless, the same as the type person you are indicating. It's not the fault of the art, or spirituality, these people have failed to learn and understand what they were taught.

yes.. it is true... that's because it will use the shortest and fastest way to lock your opponent/s from move further. By the way, I saw so many stupid mma/ other martial art movement such as bulldozing like a wild boar (in the name of grappling) which is easier for silat practitioner to counter attack. Do you know that muay thai, kungfu, ninjutsu and tae-kwondo practitioner being defeated many times by silat practitioner from south east asia??? well, don't look at the game/ sports, but look at the real fight/ street fight captured on camera... It's not about strength, or speed, but it's about the technical skills, accuracy, calmness and how you use your mind to defeat mind of your opponent first, before and during the fight

Not sure about that but I reccommend you check out the style, art, and philosophy of Bruce Lee. To get interested in this you only need to check out one of his movies like "Enter the Dragon" or "Game of Death"
