highlighting involves bleach which dries out your hair and i assume you are trying to avoid harsh chemicals. what they did back in the olden days is use lemon juice! you can put it in your hair and the sun will help naturally lighten it. this works better in the summer obviously (but maybe you live somewhere there is a lot of sun). it is a gradual process tho, so don't expect immediate results. if you are worried about hair dye, you should know that they have come a long way and are much less damaging to your hair (especially if you use a really thick conditioner immediately after rinsing the dye out (don't be afraid to leave it in a while). your question says 'brighten'... you can get a henna gloss that doesn't change the color of your hair, just makes it really shiny and healthy looking (think long, Indian woman hair). the only draw back i found when i used it is that it is the consistency of snot, so it was a little gross (and kinda fun).

Highlights would still be permanent bleach on your hair. There are very fine sprays that really add brilliant shine to any hair color without weighing it down or making it oily. That would be attractive with your dark hair. Of course, you could use some strands of another color, maybe pink, blue or purple, woven into your hair like highlights.

i heard that chaomille tee and lemon juice can make your hair lighter:) but mind you, this can make your hair dry, so after lightening put loads of conditioner on your hair... hope it works out for you:)
