To be honest it is more a winter festival, that has been overtaken by Christianity. For thousands of years, before Christianity people have been celebrating 'mid-winter festivals' really as a means of lightening the dark nights, it could be a way of giving thanks or validations to Pagan Gods as well. Some of the more closely linked pre-chrisitan festivals are Yule and Saturnalia
As Christ's actual birthday is supposed to be somewhere between January and April, it is certainly not an accurate celebration of his birthday. December is a magical season to remind us of Jesus' birth that has been historical in the making. It is a time to celebrate the gift of family and friends, the joy of all good things in the world and how grateful we are for the many blessings in our lives. I guess that would be how the Christians would certainly view it.
The short of it is the origins of a mid-winter celebration probably do lie in some sort of religion as religion for a long time was the social fabric that glued people together!

Not anymore. In today's society, little kids who don't go to church can go through their entire childhood celebrating Christmas every year and never even realize that it has anything to DO with Jesus. Christmas nowadays is about Santa Claus, presents, Charlie Brown specials, Christmas trees and decorations... not the Bible. It's a religious holiday if you want it to be, but it's not really celebrated as such anymore.

Friend: The X is the first letter of the Greek word "Christ" and it is an acceptable rendition of "Christmas." Christmas is a celebration of God's gift to people. It is more than religious it is a way to say thank you for the gift. Teaberrygum

wither you spell it x-mas or Christmas does not make it a religious holiday . as they are language evolutions. That take the religious meaning out of the day.And make it a commercial money making day.
The adding of Santa Clause,Kris Kringle,Frosty the snowman are diversions for children as the parents don't think they can't grasp the idea or can't explain the real idea of it to their children.

Not if you choose to celebrate it as Xmas. If you choose to celebrate CHRISTmas it is indeed a religious holiday when we celebrate the birth of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

To some it is a celebration of the nativity, the birth of Christ.
To others it is a redressed pagan holiday.

YES!! Christmas is the birthday of Jesus Christ, God's son. that's why its the best holliday ever and it's so happy and people give each other gifts. because Jesus was born, 2000 years ago, of a virgin in a manger and shepherds came and kings came to worship Him.

It is supposed to be a holyday for the birth of Christ but when you look at the facts, Jesus wasn't even born in december.
