well, it helps distribute the oils from you scalp throughout your hair and stimulates the scalp (so more hair will grow and grow healthy). also, do not use a brush on wet hair (wet hair stretches and will snap under the bristle pressure of the brush), use a comb (the reason it hurts more is that it pulls hair out at the root, which will still leave whole, healthy hairs in your head). and do don't brush (or comb) too frequently, it can cause more damage than you want. brush (or comb) enough to style and then leave it.

I only know that combing your hair 2 or 3 times in a day will give you more benefits, and excessive brushing and combing will give your hair severe damage.
