are you his supervisor? its hard to address the stink issue but the clothes issue should hold some relevance. i am assuming there is some kind of dress code. a supervisor or manager should be able to pull him aside and suggest better kept hair or more frequent shaving or recommend wearing freshly ironed clothes or something to cut down on his slovenly habits. if you are not in position to do this discuss it with whoever is above you.

Ugggh I had a similar problem when I was working in England for six months. Two people at the office had just horrible hygiene--and I had to sit right next to them. In the winter it got REALLY bad because they would turn the heat up at the plant and these guys stunk. Especially one of them. Me and another visiting American coworker would brainstorm ways to tell them but our tours were up soon enough.

Showering once/day in the morning, shampooing your hair at least once a month and wearing deodorant every day is not too much to ask in the realm of hygiene if you ask me.

Make a joke out of it. If you can find it funny then so can he. Get him laughing cause you want to be laughing WITH him not AT him. Trust me, I've done this. Usually, they have no idea. Body odor can be from medications (the WORST) or food choices ie: garlic, sugar, curry...so, the smell might be internal and coming out through the skin. Here's an example: Sooooo.. ...buddy! whooh! HA ha ha! is your hygiene at home still taking the mandatory 20 minute shower heh heh heh and doing laundry? ha ha ha Cause I smell something rancid and I thought your name was Bob? Oh...my nose. Hold on, I can't breathe

"Hey dude. How about getting some new clothes, or bathing once in a while." You have to work with him and he needs better hygiene. I would just be frank about it and just tell him. But you don't want to be mean. Just tell him "you stink."

Ask him why he doesn't shower or change clothes. Maybe he's really poor or has a phobia of bathing (it's a real thing). It could be cultural, too. If he's just lazy and doesn't care about others, then tell him firmly, but not insultingly, that you can't stand the smell of him.

Urinate into a Gatorade 32 oz. bottle, add milk, a half dozen goldfish, some yeast and a little chicken broth. Place near a heater vent for 3 or 4 days, then accidentally 'spill' it all over his workstation before he gets there. You will need to go home sick. Because you will be.

Ask him "do you shower everyday?" and say "hey you're wearing the same clothes you wore yesterday. Is your washing machine broken?"
