Hindi can help you with the northern and western states. English can help you in urban South India. The Best language for any visitor anywhere is of course the sign language, despite some of the tricky traps pf difference in significance. If you know Tamil most South Indians will understand you.

Hindu is the language spoken and understood by most of the people. Down south, perhaps, Hindi will not be as widely known as in the rest of the country. However, it is a good idea to start with Hindi. But, if you want to imbibe yourself with the culture and ethos of India, I would like you to learn Sanskrit, although it is not a spoken language here.

If you know Hindi, then you can make it all over India. Hindi is mainly spoken in North, but understood everywhere. People in South (except Banglore and Hyderabad) do not speak though they understands Hindi. So coupled with English, you cam travel all over India by knowing only Hindi.
