Most mammals, birds, and fish see in colour. They are not always great at distinguishing between some colours, much like humans who are 'colour blind' ---it rarely means that they see only in black and white, but rather that they might have a hard time telling the difference between certain colours.
Cats have better colour vision than dogs. Certain breeds of dogs, however, especial the breeds called "sight hounds", those that were traditionally used for sight hunting, tend to have better colour vision than some other breeds. Fish and birds often have excellent colour vision, but may see colours a little different than we do. Cats see most colours quite well, but are especially good at seeing greens and blues.

Ya know, that is a really good question...According to so called "scientists" they say that animals see in black and white, but I don't really believe that to be true...When I was training my dog, I taught him the difference between his blue, red and green tennis ball. Now if he were color blind, you would think that they all would have looked the same. Cats I think are the same way...Animals may not see EVERY color, but I don't think they are completely color blind.

All animals are different. All I know is dogs see in black and white, guinea pigs see in colour (apart from red).
Lil_goober19... the reason why your dog can see the difference between the colours is that they would be different shades. Think about it.. on black and white films you can see different shades of black and grey. Something blue would be shaded darker than something green.

I totally agree with lil goobe, I DO believe that cats/dogs CAN see color. I have a baby kitten, that is 9wks old now, and has very poor eyesite, and he KNOWS the difference between a pink ball and a purple or green one. He will follow a pink, green or red ball, before he will follow the purple one. And there all the same kind of balls, just a different color. CATS DO see the COLOR RED, mine do anyway.

Mine can see colors and his favorite is his red ball.
He has the same kind of balls in yellow, blue, but
the red one is his favorite. And he love chasing the
red laser dot as he thinks it is a bug. So red is his
favorite over all the others.
