In a story, I have two characters who are in jail for the night, becasue they were caught in a gang fight, so here are the questions, please answer what ever you know

What does the inside of a jail cell look like?
Should there be a specific reason for their release?
Is it okay for the officers to have put them there for only one night.?
How do they release them?
In which manner would their shoelaces and belts be returned?

They didn't resist arrest, they were rather badly beaten.
They weren't part of any gangs but got pulled in as the fight became huge
Chains were involved, but no other weapons
No one was killed

It happened in a rough neighborhood
They had never been arrested before, but were each caught once previously with petty theft

Okay, you've got a good description of the cell, except that your characters will have to use the toilet and shower in front of everyone else, depending on the size of the jail. In large county jails, it's all one big open room during the day, then everyone's locked down at night in cells two to a room. And don't count on them getting in the same room, or even the same unit, unless you're writing fiction.....

A specific reason for their release? If they have been officially arrested, they're not going to walk out of there just because they want to. If they get arrested on a Friday night, they might have to wait until a bond hearing on Monday morning. The judge looks at the charges, sets bail accordingly, and then your guys better hope someone has the bucks to bond them out or put up their house. Even then, they will be returned to the cell while the bail bondsman does the paperwork in his office. It might be late afternoon before the bondsman shows up, the guys are summoned, have to wait and wait as they are processed down the halls (forget anything quick about the legal system, especially if it's lunch time), and finally get their property back and change clothes in little stalls, before having the bondsman meet them at the back door. And that's just the beginning.....

You are talking about a holding cell, which could be a variety of sizes. They are used at a town, city, or county level. Many have an open toilet in them, and benches along the walls. They are not meant for anything but short term holding. A jail or prison cell is about 6 feet wide by 10 feet long. The bed is on one side, and the toilet/sink (usually a 1 piece stainless steel unit) is on the opposite side in the far corner. Some cells are single, and some are double bunked (bunk beds). They have small lockers which are about 18 inches wide and 3 feet high with 2 or 3 shelves in it. Prison cells are for long term "storage". In your question you asked about releasing them. A judge would have to authorize a release after arraignment and ordering bail or ROR (release on own recognizance). If they are released there would most likely be a property Officer that would give them back their belongings. They would have to sign a receipt that their property was accounted for, belts, shoelaces, and all.
