If "cult" religions are so good at mind control, why are their attrition rates so high?

People who join cults often have family and friends who try really hard to get them to see the light. It also depends on how suseptable to mind control a person is. Some people may buy in for a while and then see the light while others are easily controlled and will never question. It's a combo of mind control skills and an easily controllable victim.
