No way 5 hours!! I have made it in 6 hours but I was pushin'. (I have done that drive so many times, I know where the Highway Patrol hang out).
It's almost exactly 410 miles from Anaheim to Sacto. So figure it out. Including a 30 minute gas and bio-break midway, it goes like this:
At 50mph, it's 9 hours
At 55mph, it's 8.1 hours
At 60mph, it's 7.5 hours
At 65mph, it's 7 hours
At 70mph, it's 6.5 hours
At 75mph, it's 6.1 hours
At 80mph, it's 5.8 hours
At 85mph, it's 5.4 hours
At 90mph, it's 5.1 hours
At 5 hours, I'm definitely getting off the freeway when the Mapquest guys are driving.
At 410mph, it's 1.0 hour, you didn't need a bio-break and you don't need gas; you need jet fuel at Sac Metro Airport.
Depending on what time of day you hit downtown LA, you may hit jams and delays. If you hit bad timing jams, add 1 hour of delay time.
LA is one hour north of you on I-5. Time your departure to miss the Big Three:
1. Morning commute. About 6am to 9:30am
2. Lunch traffic. About 11:15am to 1:45pm
3. Evening commute: About 3:15pm to 7pm
Gas and bio in Coalinga.

Last March I had the experience of going to San Diego from Concord, California which is near Sacramento. We stopped over at Orange County. We left Concord at 9 am & arrived San Diego at around 3 pm due to the traffic in LA. We just had the traffic there. We had stopovers for our breakfast & lunch. I guess you can take it in 5-6 hours. It depends on the traffic & isnt there any holiday around. I had been in LA during the spring break & traffic is really great! Holiday traffic are everywhere. Weekends have great traffic too. If you have an option, travelling on a weekday will be better. Leave early!

5-6 hours from Los Angeles.
7-8 from Anaheim/OC.
All depends on traffic. I got stuck near Pyramid Lake one time for nearly an hour due to a brush fire. You can't really plan for things like that. But on average, 7-8 hours driving about 80 mph.

Santa Cruz and Monterey beaches are fun and beautiful, but closer to the 3.5 - 4 hour mark from Sacramento. Fort Bragg in Mendocino Co and anywhere north or south of there are beautiful too. Bodega Bay and Dillon Beaches are also good. They're in Sonoma County just west of Petaluma/Santa Rosa. You should also drive along the Marin County coastline and visit the lighthouse off the point just north of San Francisco. Another idea is to spend the day just driving along Hwy 1 and visiting the various beaches along the way. P.S.: lol Ruby. Someone's desperate for a date.

Expect 8 with a pit stop in good weather, if traffic is not bad in the LA area, weather is good over the Grapevine, and fog is not bad in the valley. I've done this thousands of times. UGH.
This applies to Interstate 5.
99 always takes about an hour more.
In the summer, I suggest taking a couple days and coming up Coast Route 1 instead. In a convertible, with your sweetheart.
Me, I prefer Southwest Airlines.

Allow 8 hours, including service stations and snacks, plus traffic in LA. You'll have hardly any traffic on Interstate 5. Have a nice drive.

Driving time without stopping to eat or get gas will probably be 6 hours. 7 if you really get stuck in traffic.

If you start out before rush hour traffic like 6 AM you can make it in 5 hours.
Getting through L.A. is the toughest part.
