Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.

In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.

Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.

In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.

If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

Look for the following ingredients when purchasing products:

1. Benzoyl Peroxide-Don't overdo it though. It tend to dry out tender skin and cause rashes. Look for lotions from oxy, clearsil, etc. with this ingredient and dab the lotion right on the pimple.

2. Salicylic Acid-Washes and Lotions with this ingredient help peel away the outer skin layer, and pushing through newer skin. It helps unclog the pores leaving your skin with a healthier glow.

3. Glycolic Acid or Alpha Hydroxy Acid-Similar to Salicylic Acid, but a little more effective. A dermotologist can treat you with a strong percentage and it will literally peel your dead skin away. Great for younger looking skin.

4. Non-Comedigenic-This means that the lotion you apply is not clogging your pores. Use this when looking for washes, moisturizers and sunscreens (look at Cetaphil, Purpose and some Neutrogena products).

5. Do not buy toners or alcohol wipes. These will dry out the outer layer of your skin, but at the same time-it makes your skin think its dry and makes the oil glands more active!

It is important NOT to overwash, apply alcohol or anything that will dry out your skin. Drying for acne is a myth. The key is to keep your pores unclogged, not allowing bacteria to get trapped underneath.

If you have special event and have an oversized pimple that is just too embarrassing, your dermotologist can give you a cortisone shot that will bring it down overnight.

Stay out of the Sun! Not only does this dry out your skin and create a "dead" layer of skin that eventually clogs your pores, but is also one of the cheif reasons for rosecea, an adult skin disorder that looks just like acne.

Keep in mind that hormones are one of the biggest causes of acne. You can't change your age and what your body does naturally, however you can reduce the foods that affect your hormones negatively. Chocolate is a myth, don't buy into that. Instead look into reducing dairy products and other food that affect your hormonal system. Drink lots of water, and eat lots of fruits and veggies.

In the end, there are lots of products that contain the ingredients mentioned, do your homework, and check the prices. Some products charge $60-$100 or something you can buy at the drugstore with the same active ingredients for $6-$18. The key is-look at the ingredients!

I struggled with acne for years and I finally found the solution that works for me. We have been fooled, tricked, deceived, and just plain lied to. It's time that someone put a stop to it, and everyone learn the truth!

Those of us who suffer from acne have usually been given 2 choices and neither of them work:

1. Over the counter remedies such as cleansers, creams, ointments, etc. These things have been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem.

2. Go see a doctor and or dermatologist. They will generally prescribe prescription drugs which include topicals and or antibiotics. This, too, has been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem.

I found a step-by-step program that cured my acne and it has never come back. It is amazing and doesn’t use any drugs or doctors. The truth is that acne can be cured…if we know the secret the doctors and drug companies don’t want us to know.

There is a great website: http://cure-my-acne.info/3daycure/ that has all the details. I really suggest you check it out and see if it works as well for you as it did for me.

White vinegar! Use a cloth or cotton ball and wipe your face with white vinegar rub it on the acne a couple of times let set a few minutes the wash the vinegar off do this every morning and night most of your acne will disappear over night. As with any treatment you have to continue to use it. And change your diet as the first answerer said. For the scars. Go to Wal- Greens,Rite Aid or Wal-Mart. and buy "Mederma" it only takes a very small amount and gently rub it into the scars and continue to "gently rub" and it will start removing the scar tissue.Be sure to only rub gently, because if you rub to hard you will cause a burn. My mom used mederma on her scar after heart surgery and within 4 weeks you could barely see the scar

For me, diet is the single biggest factor in causing acne. Before spending a lot of money on cleansers and treatments (which are expensive and often don't work), or go on accutane (which can be dangerous), try adjusting your diet. The secret is keeping your blood sugar levels stable. This involves more than just eliminating the obvious culprits, like sweets and soda. It involves eating things that score low on the glycemic index. It may take some studying, and some discipline, but it's worth it.

Here are some sites that are worth checking out:

Study how the glycemic index works. (It's not obvious.)

Search this popular acne forum for posts on acne and diet.

Maybe check out this book. I haven't read it, but I know that Dr. Cordain is a ground-breaker on the topic of acne and diet.

Nothing has helped me but this: washing with a salicyc acid cleanser and then, after, I put APPLE CIDER VINENGAR on my face. Goodness, nothing has helped me as much! I do it every night before bed. Mind you, however, don't put it on straight from the bottle because it burns! I pour a small amount of water, enough to cover the bottom of a cup, and half a capful of Apple Cider Vinengar. If you're not sure, taste it on your tongue...and it should be really sour. Then, take a cotton ball, wet it with the mixutre, and gently rub into skin until dry. I throw cotton ball away and continue gently rubbing it in my skin till my skin is dry. After it's dry...your skin feels WONDERFUL. Soft and nice! ANother TIp: Don't use Heinz or a store-brand apple cider. Not going to help much. I buy mine from a health food store, 100% organic. I believe it's called Eden Organic apple cider vinengar.

1. Change your pillowcase every other day (sleep on it one night, flip it for the next night, then change the pillowcase for the next night. Lather, rinse, repeat. LOL). You may have to get someone to buy more pillowcases for you . In a pinch, fold a clean towel over the pillow and sleep on that. Our bodies get rid of extra oils and "poisons" in our cells by sleeping at night, and we exhale all of those through our breathing and skin. It will go into your pillowcase as you perspire at night.

2. Wash your hands in the sink, then wash your face with your HANDS ONLY. Use an antibacterial soap. Do not use a washcloth as they carry germs and bacteria and you will spread the acne around. Wash just when it gets "oily " on your forehead and nose throughout the day. Let it air dry. (Or, at school, just "pat dry" with a paper towel). Don't overwash your face, it just makes the follicles produce more oil.

3. Do NOT touch your face throughout the day. You need to train yourself not to do this. Touching spreads bacteria around. You may be holding your chin in your hand throughout the day, which would cause chin acne. You may be touching your face and not even realize that you do so. Or do you have sporting equipment where you wear a chin strap. If so, that needs to be washed in an antibacterial daily.

4. Drink lots of water throughout the day to keep your skin well- hydrated. This keeps the pores healthy.

5. Change your diet--don't eat greasy foods like fries, tacos with lots of cheese, meats. Add lots of vegetables to your diet. Drink green tea or herb tea to flush out your system and achieve balance.

6. Use the "clear" clearasil on the acne that really hurts and DO NOT TOUCH THEM, until ready to come out. After a blemish comes out, use hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and hold it on there while it cleans out the pore. It will fizz, which is what it is supposed to do. Let dry on its own.

7. If it is really getting bad, see a dermatologist so that you don't get the scarring.

Good luck , I had this problem in high school . I wish someone had told me to back off on all the face washing.
